The Bermuda Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) was founded in 1921 and is registered as Charity No. 86 under the Bermuda Charities Act 1978.
The Society consists of over 1000 Members and is governed by a Committee of Management elected at the Annual General Meeting held in November.
We are a non-profit organization which relies heavily on the generosity of the public to support us through memberships, donations, bequests and by giving generously to our Annual Appeal and Tag Day. We also work hard to help ourselves by way of fundraising activites during the year.
A copy of our Financial Statement for the year ended May 31, 2009 is available from our Office upon request.
There are over 1,000 members of the Society. Membership dues raise some $20,000 annually for the S.P.C.A. As a member you receive our Animal Tales newsletter and all Adult Members have voting rights within the Society.
We have been presenting a program in the primary schools for the past three years and intend to focus on Education as a priority moving forward. We are currently looking for a Humane Education Officer to help develop a comprehensive program that will serve us for years to come.
Our Kennel Administrators give tours of the Shelter to schools, nurseries and various children’s groups. Children are taught basic care of cats and dogs as well as how to approach an unknown animal. Our Inspector and one of our other staff members visit schools and other interested organizations giving presentations and providing specific information on the care of animals.
All adult cats and dogs are spayed or neutered before being adopted into a new home. With puppies and kittens, the new owner must agree to have the animal spayed or neutered as early as possible (usually four months for kittens and six months for dogs). The Office Administrator will make the appointment with the Veterinary Hospital of the new owner’s choice and a follow up is done to ensure the appointment has been kept.
As part of the Shelter’s procedures, all dogs and cats entering the Shelter are assessed by a Kennel Administrator, and are generally bathed, dewormed and treated for fleas. Dogs are given a general health check and vaccination while cats are tested for FIV and FIL, given a general health check and vaccinated by a Veterinarian. Where a former owner has provided veterinary information, these procedures may be waived. It is essential that animals adopted by the S.P.C.A. are healthy and protected from diseases that they may be exposed to after adoption.
Upon request, the S.P.C.A. will subsidize the spay or neuter of puppies and kittens adopted from the Shelter. This subsidy is generally 50% of the cost of surgery.
PAT provides financial assistance for elderly pet owners and those who cannot pay for costly medical treatment for their pets. Assistance is provided on a case-by-case basis. Assistance may be in the form of providing food, paying medical bills, or transporting the animal to a Veterinary Hospital.
The S.P.C.A. has a flourishing Volunteer Program with over 30 regular Dog Walkers and Cat Helpers. Regularly scheduled Volunteers walk dogs each morning and afternoon. Cat Helpers generally come in the morning to help with the cleaning and socializing of cats. Cat “Socializers” come in regularly to provide extra love and attention to the cats and kittens. Socialization is a tremendous benefit to the cats and kittens, particularly kittens that come in from the feral cat population.
There is a Junior Volunteer program on Saturdays. During any given weekend, there will be up to eight Junior Volunteers helping with the Cats and doing other Shelter work. Junior Volunteers must be at least 14 years old.
We also rely on our Volunteers for our various fund raising activities and special projects throughout the year.
