HOW DO I GO ABOUT
ADOPTING A PET?
Before you set about taking on a pet, please take time to consider the following carefully:
- Can you commit to taking on an animal for the duration of it's life, bearing in mind that; on average, dogs live 12 - 16 years; cats 16 - 20 years; rabbits/guinea pigs 5 - 6 years?
- Can you afford a pet? The cost of keeping an animal can be considerable, particularly where medical expenses are involved.
- Dogs require training, socializing and regular exercise. Do you have the time to commit to these activities?
- If you pet developed behavior problems (e.g. barking, soiling in the house), would you be prepared to work to correct these problems?
If you have answered "Yes" to the above then please come and talk to us.
Our Procedures For Adoption Are:
- Anyone wishing to adopt an animal is required to fill in an Adoption Questionaire. You are required to bring photo ID and a utility bill with proof of address where the animal will be living.
- Once you have completed the Adoption Questionaire you may view the animals, and a Kennel Aministrator will talk to you and discuss with you what you are looking for and why, etc.
- All dog adoptions require a property check to be carried out to determine the property's suitability for an animal.
- Once you are approved as an adoptor we will work with you towards finding you the right companion animal.
- When you think you have found an animal that you'd like to adopt we will ask that you go away and think on your decision, then come back again and spend some more time with the animal before making a final decision. Only on rare occassions do we allow adoptors to meet an animal and take it home that same day.
- When you, and we, are confident that the pet you have selected is the right one for you we will then move toward your actual adoption of the animal.
The Bermuda SPCA's motto is "WE SPEAK FOR THOSE WHO CANNOT SPEAK FOR THEMSELVES", so if you think that our requests and requirements are a bit stringent, bear in mind that our aim is to find the best homes we can for animals that come through our shelter, and to do our best to ensure that we get adoptions right the first time, for the benefit of all involved.
